A Qualitative Scheme Launched by the Arab Thought Foundation in Collaboration with The French Foundation La Découverte
“One Civilization “is the title of a series of translated books dedicated to the developmental thought issues, which open up to the world with its languages and its schools of knowledge with its novelties and are worth to be known by the Arabs. When the Foundation has concluded an agreement with the French reputed foundation La Découverte conferring to the Arab Thought Foundation the translation rights of the important book “The State of the World - 2008” we were faced with finding a title to this series. The choice was made over “One Civilization” parting from the fact that cultures vary but the human civilization is one and should not be but one.
This series starts with “The State of the World-2008”, a book featuring in its last chapter a rich and varied collection of figures and tables and data pertaining to the states of the world dealing with their developmental achievements in the human, cultural, educational, economic and commercial fields. As for the first part, it provides a series of studies and in depth research compiled by prominent experts and tackles the most relevant issues and phenomena of the elapsed year. “The State of the World - 2008” book is issued systematically on an annual basis since 1981. This year it focuses on a number of important issues namely: the world system, the World Bank, emerging forces, the economic power of China, health, environment, etc…
The idea underlying behind it is simple and modest.. yet ambitious! That the Arab Thought Foundation joins the noble efforts deployed in the translation field all over the Arab World. Since the publishing of the UN human development report at the onset of the new millennium reporting that translated Arab works since Al Ma’moun Caliph equal to what a state such as Spain translates in one year, and concerns faced us all.. Consequently, a state of good mobilization starts to take shape within different fields of institutions dedicated to the translation movement be it private or governmental. For instance, in Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah International Translation Award was established. In Egypt, the National Translation Center was founded, and then Mohammad Bin Rashid Foundation, and rapidly many initiatives followed.
Today, the Arab Thought Foundation cumulates these efforts through a qualitative scheme for translation to be implemented gradually and at intervals to watch the development of the translation experience and its harvests. A periodic book every three months, and may be each month some time, when reasons for success and continuity would become available. Thus as imposed by the logic of graduation and the rationality of the initiation process.
